World Cancer Congress, Kuala Lumpur
The World Cancer Congress was held in Kuala Lumpur in October 2018.Quality of life and death was one of the 4 concurrent tracks. Within this track, we held a session on “Use of patient-reported outcome measures to drive up quality”.
Chaired by Richard Harding, examples of measure use were presented from around the world. Dr Liz Gwyther (University of Cape Town) gave examples of how the African POS is being used to measure and improve care in South Africa.
Dr Julia Downing (International Children’s Palliative Care Network) showed how POS is embedded in low and middle income countries, and showcased the innovative work in Africa on C-POS, which is the world’s first palliative care multidimensional outcome measure for children.
Dr Omar Shamieh (King Hussein Cancer Centre) demonstrated the evolution of POS and highlighted the importance of careful validation and translation in new settings. He also described how, as part of the R4HC-MENA Global Challenges Research Fund, KCL and KHCC are adapting POS to the context of conflict with refugees and displaced persons.
Dr Deb Dudgeon (Canadian Cancer Partnership) summarised progress on the International Measurement Consensus Project, demonstrating that comparing measures POS covers the greatest number of domains.
During the meeting, Professor Richard Harding met with Hospis Malaysia to discuss their work revalidating IPOS in Malaysian palliative care services.
